When the recession hit, I found my former career dangerously compromised. Like so many of my fellow hard-working Americans, I would drive home each day with a sigh of relief that I’d made it one more day. Unfortunately, my luck only held out for so long and I soon found myself feeling worthless and disposable. Those who have been there know exactly what I’m talking about.
Trying to keep my hopes up and get back on my feet, I attempted to restart my life by falling back on my childhood dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. I got back into shape, took my tests, filled out those ridiculously long and intrusive personal history packets, but soon came into a huge roadblock. I didn’t have the 20/20 vision required.
A couple of cities I’d applied to were willing to work with contacts, but even those recommended by my optometrist only irritated my eyes, making the most mundane of activities more difficult. I knew I needed to somehow correct my vision, but how could I improve my eyesight when I was just an average guy, no longer even having a job to justify the outrageous cost of lasik surgery?
While perusing the web, I stumbled across a site that mentioned eye exercises to help restore vision. It seemed a bit hokey to me, but I was running out of options, and it never hurt to look. According to the site, there were a number of vision exercises you could do on a daily basis to help restore your eyesight to 20/20! I read over reviews, testimonies (like this one) and all of the details time and time again, weighing my options as to whether or not it was worth it.
I called my optometrist and asked him about vision exercises. He quoted the American Academy of Ophthalmology stating that “there is no current validity for clinically significant improvements in vision with Behavioral Vision Therapy,” and that it seemed, “like some crazy home remedy.”
I went ahead and decided to try it on my own, finding the Vision Without Glasses program online. I was pretty excited when I got it and began reading all of the material. Once I was done, I began checking out all of the different eye exercises involved. Results weren’t immediate, but the exercises were relaxing and I continued working through them. After about a month’s time, I began to notice the difference. It happened on my way home from the store when I tipped my glasses and looked over them at a road sign, comparing the differences. I was so excited that I could see it more clearly without glasses that I started to giggle, trying my vision on a number of different objects. I couldn’t believe that I’d been able to improve my vision so much simply by doing a few eye exercises every day. It was like turning back the clock.
Three months later, I went to see my optometrist. To be honest, I just wanted to see if I was close enough to 20/20 to fulfill the police department requirements. When the doctor gave me the results, I about leapt out of my chair, thrilled that I’d been able to rebuild my vision without surgery or lenses. He was baffled at my improved vision and asked me what my secret was. I told him I was taking snake oil.
